I CHING — The Book of Changes
Everything is in constant flux—how can a person find their way within it? That is the big question to which the I Ching, the Book of Changes, offers interpretations and answers. Its origins reach back to the 3rd millennium BC; it is considered China’s oldest classic.
The I Ching inspired musicians like John Cage and the rock band Pink Floyd; it fascinated the philosopher Leibniz, the writer Hermann Hesse, and the psychoanalyst C. G. Jung. To this day it serves as oracle, orientation, and stimulus for thought. As long as things are in motion and becoming, they can be influenced—that is the principle of the I Ching and the reason this classic has lost none of its appeal.
The I Ching consists of 64 figures, the hexagrams. Each is composed of two trigrams (three-line signs) that symbolize energies and forces of nature, qualities and states. The lower trigram stands for the inner aspect of change; the upper for the outer. Together they describe the person (below) in their situation and the world (above). Let yourself be inspired.
